Abstract

  • In October 2023, the combined year on year (yoy) inflation for five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) was 2.60 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 114.14. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Sibolga at 4.33 percent with a CPI of 118.45 and the lowest occurred in Medan at 2.50 percent with a CPI of 113.59.
  • Yoy inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in all price indexes for expenditure groups, namely the food, beverage and tobacco groups by 5.12 percent; clothing and footwear group at 0.81 percent; housing, water, electricity and household fuel group at 1.00 percent; equipment, tools and routine household maintenance group of 1.31 percent; health group at 3.53 percent; transportation group at 0.51 percent; information, communication and financial services group at 0.22 percent; recreation, sports and culture group at 2.46 percent; education group of 2.83 percent; food and beverage/restaurant provision group at 1.90 percent; and the personal care and other services group at 2.78 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation yoy in October 2023 include rice, filter clove cigarettes, tomatoes, purebred chicken meat, academies/universities, gold jewelry and garlic.
  • The month to month (mtm) deflation rate for October 2023 is 0.07 percent and the year to date (ytd) inflation rate for October 2023 is 1.22 percent.
