Abstract

  • In December 2023, the combined year on year (yoy) inflation for five cities in Sumatera Utara (Sibolga, Pematangsiantar, Medan, Padangsidimpuan and Gunungsitoli) was 2.25 percent with a Consumer Price Index (CPI) of 115.30. Of the five CPI cities in Sumatera Utara, the highest yoy inflation occurred in Padangsidimpuan at 2.95 percent with a CPI of 119.05 and the lowest occurred in Medan at 2.19 percent with a CPI of 114.84.
  • Yoy inflation occurred due to an increase in prices as indicated by the increase in all price indexes for expenditure groups, namely the food, beverage and tobacco groups by 3.67 percent; clothing and footwear group by 1.02 percent; housing, water, electricity and household fuel group at 1.24 percent; equipment, tools and routine household maintenance group of 0.84 percent; health group at 3.92 percent; transportation group by 1.32 percent; information, communication and financial services group at 0.27 percent; recreation, sports and culture group at 1.64 percent; education group at 2.82 percent; food and beverage/restaurant provision group at 1.75 percent; and the personal care and other services group at 2.73 percent.
  • The main commodities contributing to inflation yoy in December 2023 include rice, red chilies, filter clove cigarettes, academies/universities, granulated sugar, gold jewelry and air transportation.
  • The month to month (mtm) inflation rate for December 2023 was 0.57 percent and the year to date (ytd) inflation rate for December 2023 was 2.25 percent.
